My Queen ventured deep into enemy territory on h5. Black's King is castled on g8, defended by a wall of pawns, and my clock was ticking under 10 seconds!
What should White play here?
Behind the Blunder: Anastasia's Mate Pattern↓
This classic tactic is known as Anastasia's Mate, named after the 1803 novel Anastasia und das Schachspiel by Wilhelm Heinse.
How the checkmate works:
- The White Knight on e7 traps the Black King on g8 by controlling escape squares g8, g6, and g8.
- White plays 22. Qxh7+!, forcing the Black King to capture 22... Kxh7 onto the open h-file.
- White swings the waiting Rook over: 23. Rh3# (or Rh1#), delivering an unstoppable back-rank mate against the edge of the board!
Moral of the story: When your opponent's king has no breathing room, look for the Queen sacrifice before grabbing random pawns!
